Scoliosis, defined as a lateral curvature of the spine measuring greater than 10 degrees on radiographic assessment, affects individuals across the lifespan. While commonly diagnosed in adolescence, scoliosis can also persist or develop in adulthood due to degenerative changes, neuromuscular conditions, or untreated childhood cases. Early identification and intervention are critical—especially in pediatric populations where the curvature may be correctable with conservative management.

The Role of Physical Therapy in Pediatric Scoliosis

In children and adolescents, scoliosis often presents during periods of rapid growth. If identified early, physical therapy can be instrumental in preventing progression and, in many cases, improving spinal alignment and postural control. Evidence-based scoliosis-specific exercise programs focus on:

  • Postural education and correction

  • Neuromuscular re-education

  • Spinal stabilization

  • Asymmetrical strengthening and stretching

  • Breathing techniques to improve rib cage expansion and spinal mobility

These interventions aim to halt or reverse curve progression, improve spinal biomechanics, and reduce the need for bracing or surgical intervention when initiated promptly.

Managing Scoliosis in Adults

While structural correction is not likely in skeletally mature individuals, physical therapy remains a critical component of managing adult scoliosis. Degenerative scoliosis may be accompanied by pain, stiffness, and functional limitations. Physical therapy helps address these issues by:

  • Enhancing core strength and spinal stability

  • Improving postural awareness

  • Increasing flexibility and range of motion

  • Reducing muscle imbalances and compensatory movement patterns

  • Minimizing pain through manual therapy and therapeutic exercise

Consistent intervention can prevent further curve progression, support spinal alignment, and enhance overall quality of life.

Early Detection. Evidence-Based Care.

At our clinic, our licensed physical therapists are trained to assess, treat, and monitor scoliosis at every stage. Whether your child has been newly diagnosed or you are an adult managing long-standing scoliosis, we develop personalized, evidence-based treatment plans to meet your specific needs and goals.
